Just how do we now find ourselves designing and building a custom kitchen hutch? For the last three years, I’ve kept my eyes peeled for a perfect kitchen hutch. I’ve been wanting a hutch/coffee station for our kitchen from the day we moved in. We kept our eyes peeled for one but everything we found was too big, too expensive, or just not my style. This project got moved to the back burner as clearly it isn’t essential. And, I really couldn’t decide what I wanted this piece to be.
Our first thought was to find a old china cabinet at the goodwill to makeover, like this gorgeous piece over at Bower Power Blog. These colors are swoon worthy…
Or this lovely cabinet by Beachwood Place. It’s so unique!
Or this beautiful white hutch by The Honeycomb Home. Glass doors…yes please!
Unfortunately we never found anything. Either it was falling apart, too big for our space, or just too bulky overall. Although a little extra storage is always a bonus, I really want this piece to be my coffee station/happy place/gorgeous showpiece. So I definitely lean towards something more narrow/sleek…kinda hard to find in an old china cabinet.
But a few weeks ago, I was shopping with my mother-in-law and we came across this beauty (terrible photo, but the piece itself is so pretty). I fell in love with it immediately. It’s glass panels, mirrored back, overhead lights, simple and slim design…the whole thing. It needed a little love, but nothing we couldn’t do.
I was sold…but of course it was the one piece in the store that was NOT for sale. I even contacted the shop owner to see if she’d sell it to me, but she wasn’t ready to part with it. 🙁
So that left me with one option…take Michael to the shop, show him the piece, and beg him to make one for me. He said yes! Custom kitchen hutch it is. Eeeeeeeek…so excited!!!
So while Michael designs the build and gets to work, I start looking for paint. As much as I love white and muted colors, my house needs some COLOR. And this is my statement piece after all. I went back and forth on green, yellow, red, blue. I was willing to try anything. But I kept landing on blue. There are so many pretty, bold blues out there.
After a lot of paint researching and many, many samples, we’ve finally decided on a color. Our custom kitchen cabinet itself is coming along very nicely.
We should have it finished up in a few weeks and I can’t wait to share it with you! Stay tuned!
Meanwhile, check out Michael’s Modern Industrial TV Cart! It’s been a perfect addition to our master bedroom.
