I am pretty behind on getting these posted. But finally…
So I’ve been wanting some decorative lanterns for our front porch for quite some time, but I haven’t been able to convince myself to spend $50-60 EACH. Maybe one day, but not while we’re trying to keep our décor on the frugal end.
I was walking through HomeGoods one quiet evening and found these beauties for a fraction of the price!
The large one was around $20, medium $15, and small $10. Much better price-wise! AND, much more flexibility to decorate for different seasons or styles.
I picked up some candles, floral stems, and a couple things from around the house and started playing with different combinations. The possibilities are endless, but here are a few ideas.
Style 1: Modern
Style 2: Romantic
Style 3: Fall/Harvest
Assembly Tips
My goal was to keep these very simple. Here are a ideas on items from around the house that can be incorporated and a few tips for assembly:
- For the Modern Lantern, I used an old salsa jar. This a great way to reuse any kind of jar or container that you’d otherwise throw away.
- Use twine or ribbon to secure a bunch of greenery or florals.
- Have a bouquet of flowers you’re about to toss out? Wait! Lay them out in a cool dry space for a couple weeks to let them dry out naturally. These make for some gorgeous decorative touches. I used dried eucalyptus and baby’s breath from my sister’s wedding in the Fall/Harvest Lantern.
- Use hot glue! I used got glue to secure the bottom of the candles to the lanterns and the floral stem to the bottom of the salsa jar.
- Remember, less is more! No need to over do it on the decor. Groups of three work really well!
- And, try new things! I mixed and matched all of the different items I had until I found combinations that I really liked.
These are so easy and inexpensive, a happy alternative to those pricey (albeit lovely) lanterns you see everywhere! I can’t wait to decorate them for Christmas!
