Long story short, my parents got a new TV for Christmas. We helped them haul the old one away… right to our house! So now we have officially become TV in the bedroom people. That’s fine. Judge away.
Only problem is we have no place to set this new/old TV. It’s like 10 years old, so it’s much heavier than today’s models, and we don’t really want to hang it on the wall. Oh and we also will want to use it from time to time in other rooms as a secondary monitor for stuff and things. So it needs to be mobile. And not be too bulky. And look good.
So we opted for a basic cart (my favorite!) with a single drawer to house any cords and accessories (remotes, streaming devices, etc.). Clean and classy, but also with some soul. A little bit modern, a little bit industrial, and a whole lot practical and beautiful.
Design / Build
Glued and stained 2x4s on top, painted 1/2″ plywood box and drawer beneath, then some leftover 1-1/2″ steel angle for the legs, glued 1×4 bottom shelf, a couple more lengths of 1×4 for bottom trim, and some 4″ casters pretty much round out the assembly.
I did get a little creative with the connections between the legs and the box. Using a ripped down 2×6 on either side of the box, I was able to cut in some little reveals to help the steel stand out some from the painted wood. There’s also a little hint of the same detail down below at the bottom shelf. Simple countersunk holes in the steel and dark gray drywall screws work just fine.
I tossed in a power strip within the drawer (mounted with some little screws), then cut a 2″ diameter hole though the back of both the drawer itself and the box as a cord grommet.
The colors came more or less from a quasi-impressionist landscape painting that we’ve had in our room for a while. It’s a soothing composition, but going with the direct colors would not quite have given the same level of…. “sophistication” we’ll call it as the darker color pairing we ended up with. Is it a little moody and dramatic? Yes. Is it really cool with the steel and stain? Also yes.
