This is 30 Days of Blogging: Day 14
Our custom kitchen hutch/my coffee bar is one of the many pieces Michael designed and built for our house.
We’d been wanting a custom piece for this space since we bought the house. We are fairly certain that a built-in counter/cabinets unit was supposed to be put in, but the contractor ran out of $$? We didn’t want to invest in a built in, so we decided to go with a custom piece that would fit the space, maximize storage, and that could move with us in the future.
You can read more about the inspiration for our custom kitchen hutch here: Custom Kitchen Hutch Inspiration. But enough talk, let’s get to the good stuff.
Drumroll please….
Hello beautiful blue kitchen hutch! 😍

We are super happy with out it turned out. The extra storage is amazing and it adds a beautiful touch to our (very gray) kitchen. It’s certainly an accent piece, but fully functional and practical at the same time.
Custom Kitchen Hutch Details
Paint
We got over 20 paint samples (yes samples, not swatches) to try. While that seems like a lot, we’re really glad we did! The colors all looked so different in our kitchen than just on a swatch or even in another room, so it really helped to be able to test all the colors in the space where the piece would live. It also really helped to see the colors side by side. We’re not normally this picky about the color of our piece, but because this was a larger piece and the only pop of color in the kitchen, it was important to get it right.
After all the searching and sampling, we went with
Hardware
I found this beautiful hardware on Etsy. I definitely wanted something for unique than the standard options at the big box stores and Etsy did not disappoint!
Mirror & Glass
For whatever reason, I’m in love with glass in cabinet doors. It just looks so pretty and classy. It also opens up the piece making it feel fresh and light. We got the glass from our local hardware store and they were able to cut it to size there for us.
We also picked up the mirror from the local hardware store. While we did want the hutch to fit just right in our awkward kitchen corner, we also wanted it to be easy to fashion with standard-sized accents. So Michael sized it to fit the mirror size we could get locally to keep it easy.

Custom Kitchen Hutch Décor
We definitely stuck with “less is more” for the décor, especially since we wanted the hutch to be more of a functional piece than a decorative one. But here are a few small touches that really go a long way:
String Lights! You won’t need the big patio ones, just the little battery-powered string lights that you can find at Walmart, Target, or pretty much any big box store with home items.
Flowers. Where do flowers not look good? Seriously. Use some flowers to add a small pop of color and cheerfulness. I love using dried flowers for décor.
White Accents. White accents are classy, match with everything, and provide contrast (unless you have a white kitchen hutch…).
Storage on Display. The hutch has been a great place to store my fancier dishes, pitchers, and coffee accessories that I use for entertaining. It frees up my cabinet space for less attractive items and keeps things for entertaining easily accessible vs stuck up in hard-to-reach cabinets or shelves.

I really love my custom kitchen hutch and am so glad it’s something we will be able to keep with us wherever home might be. And it’s 100 times better than anything I could find in stores! Custom builds FTW! 🤍
